This 5th Avenue museum preserves the history and culture of the people of New York City. They have a great online collection of artwork, photos, ads, and objects.

National Archives: New York Branch

The National Archives has an amazing array of records--from genealogical research to government documents to city planning. Definitely worth checking out.
